Top Influencer Marketing Tips for Small Businesses

influencer

By Holly Ashby

When developing an influencer marketing strategy, it's easy to assume that it's something only big businesses can afford. With celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Internet-born stars such as Zoella commanding hundreds of thousands of dollars – simply for wearing a particular product in their videos – it may seem as if engaging an influencer takes a big brand name and huge marketing budget.

However, this couldn't be further from the truth. With bloggers, Instagram stars and YouTube personalities with a variety of audiences actively courting brands, influencer marketing is a strategy you can utilize on any budget.

Why use influencer marketing?

Research by the Center for Marketing Research at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth suggests that young people in particular are becoming increasingly resistant to traditional advertising. By 2017 it's predicted that one third of all Internet users will be using some form of ad-blocker, ultimately diminishing the effectiveness of banner advertising. With evolving user behavior, businesses of all sizes are going to have to be more creative in the ways in which they promote their brand.

One of the key benefits of influencer marketing is that it taps into a ready-made audience, and subsequently the trust and admiration that influencer has already cultivated. If a blogger who has a great relationship with their readers reviews, likes or comments on your product, people are more likely to take this recommendation seriously. It's this suggestion of credibility and authenticity that can often make influencer marketing so effective.

Choose the right influencer

While bloggers with hundreds of thousands of followers or the more well known YouTube stars may be as difficult (or expensive) to engage with as celebrities, so called "micro-influencers" (who have fewer than 10,000 followers) can actually garner more engagement from their audience and are more likely to work with small to medium sized businesses. Even someone who only has a thousand followers could prove to be an extremely valuable collaborator for your business.

The first step in influencer marketing is finding the people who are most likely to be enthusiastic about your business. Think about your brand values and the key principles of your business, search for bloggers who share these ideals. For example, if your business has sustainable credentials, green living bloggers would be a natural partnership. If your business is reliant on local customers, you may also want to focus on bloggers located within a similar area, tapping into an audience who may be more receptive to your products and services.

Create a two-sided relationship

When approaching an influencer it's important to be both friendly and open, just as your would in the real world. Also, everyone is susceptible to flattery so letting them know how much you appreciate their work can often go a long way. Retweeting and sharing their content will help introduce them to your brand before you reach out the them over email, turning the initial approach from cold to semi-warm and increasing your chances of a reply.

Plenty of influencers will also expect some kind of payment for promoting your brand, but by setting a strict budget and negotiating politely, you can avoid overspending by determining what's within your budget from the outset. If you can communicate your shared values, influencers will be much more likely to develop a positive working relationship with you.

Experiment with different strategies

As with anything online, testing is everything. It's rare that you'll achieve great success from the very first attempt, so vary your tactics in order to find out what works. One month you could engage smaller bloggers and social media users (spreading your budget across a variety of sources), and the following month you could dedicate your whole budget to a solitary influencer with a larger audience.

You may also want to try a social media takeover, where a influencer runs your social media accounts for a day. If you have no marketing budget at all, sending free samples or inviting influencers to try out your service is one way to get them to discuss your brand with their audience.

When conducting any testing it's imperative that you've defined and set-up the various tracking metrics you'll need in order to compare results.

Analyzing the results

Remember that not all benefits can be measured in immediate sales – raising brand awareness is more difficult to measure, and the benefits may not become obvious until later. Some of the key metrics to monitor will be traffic to your website, time spent on the site, conversions and engagement. There are also other advantages, for example if an influencer chooses to link to your website it will create both referral traffic can boost your visibility in organic search. Tools like Tweetreach and Google Analytics offer great insights into how your campaign is performing.

Every type of influencer will have a different reach (audience size), relevance (contextual fit with your business) and resonance (engagement power) and your marketing strategies will therefore have varied results. With some experience and careful consideration, you'll find the ones that are best for you and form long-lasting relationships.

People-Centered Performance Marketing Agency Rebrands Amid Growth

In addition to the name change, KPI Agency converted from an LLC to a corporation, in part to extend equity shares and more robust benefits packages to team members. This move, combined with a shift last year to a Holacracy system that focuses on self-organizing teams, reflects the agency's move away from a traditional top-down management hierarchy to give all team members an equal say in decision-making.

Other incentives include flexible/remote working arrangements, unlimited PTO, bonuses for taking time off, maternity/paternity benefits, and company investment into individual team members' personal growth goals.

Alongside the structural changes, the company is also announcing some key leadership changes. Former Chief Strategy Officer Brandon Dawson moves into the role of President, guiding the day-to-day business including creative oversight and performance output.

Former KPI Boutique President Chad Childress assumes the newly-created role of Chief Growth and Innovation Officer, focusing primarily on driving innovative solutions and strategic partnerships across existing and new business relationships.

Nico Coetzee remains CEO, beginning 2017 by leading KPI's first major global expansion to South Africa, where he is spending Q1 to guide the buildout of the company's southern hemisphere office, with expansion to Europe planned for Q2 of this year.

The company is also increasing its workforce by adding new senior roles, promoting from within, and launching a hiring initiative as they continue to expand worldwide.

After first launching in Southern California in 2014, KPI Agency has since adopted a remote global model -- with team members operating from California, Kentucky, Washington, Ohio, Serbia, and most recently, South Africa.

The cross-timezone presence has allowed the company to remain flexible, react quickly to ensure speedy response times, and helps eliminate the unnecessary costs and speed bumps of most big agencies.

With a primary emphasis on healthcare marketing, KPI Agency has serviced clients such as Edwards Lifesciences, PUMA Biotechnology, Bayer, Ignyta, Inc., AstraZeneca, and Abiomed, among others.

They offer a full suite of marketing and advertising services with a specialty in digital and direct marketing. Services include marketing strategy, web, social, and mobile development, display and search advertising, SEO, social listening, brand strategy and development, and more.

In addition to their non-traditional approach to management and compensation, the company's growth was partially driven by their initial pay-per-performance model that dispensed with billable hours and huge retainers, allowing clients to pay for campaign results.

Co-founders Coetzee and Childress, industry veterans formerly with WPP and inVentiv Health, say that the key to standing out has been their agency's ability to home in on the core of what their clients actually need while trimming away the excess fat.

"We've both done the whole large agency thing, and frankly, we were tired of all the smoke and mirrors and wasting time on tactics that often don't matter to the client," says Childress. "We wanted to do meaningful work that the client could believe in, that we could believe in, and that actually delivered value."

"Many agencies take a once-size-fits all approach and don't actually do anything that's truly tailored to the client's particular needs," adds Coetzee. "Our clients generally have, at their heart, two or three very simple business objectives around which everything else rotates. We believe we can help brands clarify what's really important for them and then remove the obstacles for achieving it. It might sound overly simple, but we believe it actually is that simple."

KPI Agency has officially launched a new website, which further details their philosophy, team, and service offerings. The team encourages those interested in learning more to visit their site at TheKPIAgency.com.

Winning the B2B Marketing Super Bowl

marketing teamsThe Super Bowl is definitely a playing field for consumer brands willing and able to shell out top dollar for TV spots, but for B2B marketers the big game lies elsewhere.

"For B2B companies, other types of big events offer a chance to make a splash with target audiences," notes Andy MacMillian, CEO of Act-On Software. "It could be Dreamforce or the International Builders Show or a brand re-launch accompanied by a high-visibility rollout with an extensive social marketing and media relations push."

B2B marketers that have a good game plan can get hundreds of people to stop by their booth at major industry events. That's great, but brands fumble if they don't extend that engagement beyond the event itself.

Whatever your marketing Super Bowl is, make sure you don't fumble opportunities to leverage the attention you've worked so hard to gain. Build a rolling-thunder approach to your campaign and have a plan to extend reach and engagement way beyond the event itself.

"You need to keep the conversation going, nurture these people through the sales cycle and track the true results of your marketing efforts," he says. "Deriving optimum long-term value out of a big event requires a coordinated attack. Don't look at an event or campaign in isolation but as part of a broader mega-campaign with many interlocking pieces."

MacMillian offers six strategies for scoring marketing touchdowns in the B2B big game:

  • Catch the ball. (Capture data.) "Hopefully, your activity is causing a bounce in your website traffic," he says. "Make sure you're tracking the number of visitors and noting any trends, such as a rise in traffic from certain geographic locations."
  • Know the score. (Measure.) Coach Vince Lombardi famously said "Some of us will do our jobs well and some will not, but we will all be judged on one thing: the result." Define what you're going to track and at what touch points you're going to track I, notes MacMillian.
  • Be as smart as Bill Belichick. (Analyze your data.) Segment and understand what your traffic and engagement is telling you, he says. What percentage of visitors entered your site and exited on the same page without going any further? Look at how people engage with your web pages, blog posts, social posts, white papers, data sheets, etc. Track the number of downloads, views and leads generated by each one.
  • Be smart on both sides of the ball. (Analyze external data.) "Gauge patterns in your online brand awareness by using Google Trends to check data about searches for your brand," he says. "Select a group of social media channels you are actively using and track how engaged your followers are with your brand—what percentage of your network actively participates in or engages with your shared content?" This will help you understand if your messages are inline with what your audience wants to hear. And don't forget PR—where appropriate, understand the impact of press releases and stories picked up by the media.
  • Wow the crowd. (Make your content shine.) Spend time to craft crafting content that connects with your audience. "Make sure you're able to send highly relevant customized content to the right customer or the right potential customer at just the right time."
  • Play like a team. (Coordinate with the rest of the business.) Leaders of the business must align to guide the customer at every stage of the buying and support process, MacMillan says. "As on a football team, working well together means winning more games together."

Data privacy advocates — and marketers concerned about ensuring user privacy — may have a new worry.

It's possible to determine a user's real identity — up to 70 percent of the time — simply from an anonymous browsing history.

That's the key finding in a recently released paper from researchers at Princeton and Stanford universities. The paper, "De-anonymizing Web Browsing Data with Social Networks," is scheduled for presentation in April at the World Wide Web Conference in Perth, Australia.

One of the paper's authors, assistant professor of computer science at Princeton Arvind Narayanan, said in statement that the new research "shows that anyone with access to browsing histories — a great number of companies and organizations — can identify many users by analyzing public information from social media accounts."
